Choquequirao is a joining of archaeological constructions located in the district of Santa Teresa, in the province of Convención – the department of Cusco; it is an Inca settlement built on the side of the mountain. The region contains many young valleys, as well as the Apurímac Canyon and Apurímac River (an altitude of 3,30 meters above sea level). Within its geography, Choquequirao is strategically placed between the Andean mountains and the eyebrow of the jungle; Choquequirao is part of a complex system of trail networks that connected with other Andean cities of the Valley of Vilcabamba. During the time of the Inkas, Choquequirao was in connection to Machu Picchu via a network of Inka trails.
The archaeological monument of Choquequirao corresponds to an Inka city that has divided sectors with diverse functions; it is connected by passages with the Main Plaza in its middle. The plaza is defined by constructs of different uses; it has a ceremonial character and two levels of housing. One can see the various sun and earth temples. The entire distance through and in return is approximately 60 kilometers.
